As communities grow and consumption patterns evolve, waste generation has emerged as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Large volumes of textile, wood, metal and other recyclable materials often end up in landfills, creating environmental concerns while simultaneously representing missed economic opportunities. At the same time, many women and families in rural communities continue to seek sustainable livelihood opportunities that can generate income without requiring significant capital investment.

Urja was conceptualized as a community-driven circular economy initiative that transforms waste into opportunity. The program seeks to create sustainable livelihood pathways by enabling communities, particularly women, to participate in the collection, segregation, processing and repurposing of waste materials. By combining environmental stewardship with economic empowerment, Urja demonstrates how responsible resource utilization can create lasting social, economic and environmental value. The initiative reflects SHIVAA’s belief that sustainability is most impactful when communities themselves become active participants in creating solutions.
